What is Picture Box Handwriting Paper?

Picture box handwriting paper is a worksheet format that pairs a blank bordered box for drawing with ruled handwriting lines beneath it. The box gives young writers room to illustrate a word, sentence, or story, while the lined section below guides them through writing practice with a top line, a dashed or dotted midline, and a bottom line,  the standard three-line handwriting guide.

This format is a staple of early elementary classrooms and homeschool curricula because it links two core early-literacy skills, drawing and writing on a single page, reinforcing vocabulary and storytelling alongside letter formation.

Regular Handwriting Paper vs. Picture Box Paper

Standard handwriting paper is just the ruled writing lines, repeated down the page. Picture box paper reserves space at the top of the page (or above each writing section) for a drawing box, then places the ruled lines below it. Some layouts include one large box with several lines beneath it; others repeat smaller box-and-line blocks multiple times per page.

Common Uses

  • Kindergarten and early elementary writing practice: students draw a picture and then write a word or sentence describing it
  • Sight word and vocabulary worksheets: pairing an illustration with the target word reinforces meaning and spelling
  • Journal and “my day” pages: young students draw an event and write a short caption or sentence
  • ESL and early literacy programs: visual support helps learners connect new words to meaning
  • Homeschool curricula: teachers/parents can generate consistent picture-and-write worksheets tailored to a specific grade level’s line spacing

Picture Box Handwriting Paper Generator

An online handwriting worksheet generator to make your own custom printable picture box worksheets — combining a blank illustration box with ruled handwriting lines, ideal for early writers who pair drawing with writing practice. Customize, download and print. Print on a variety of paper formats like A3, A4, A5, Letter Size, and any custom size of your choice.

This generator is easy to use. Start with Outer Line Settings to set the writing space size (in inches or mm), block spacing between the picture box and lines, line thickness, and color.

Next, configure the Middle Line Settings. Choose one or two middle lines, pick a line style (solid, dashed, or dotted), set thickness, and choose a color for the handwriting guideline.

Then set up the Picture Box Settings. Control the box’s line thickness and color, set its maximum height (from 1 to 9 blocks), and use Skip Top to leave blank blocks above the box if needed for layout spacing.

Finally, adjust the Page Settings – set layout to Portrait or Landscape, define your margins, and optionally force the grid to stay vertically centered.
